Talks still on for pay equity outside Te Whatu Ora

Nurses and Māori healthcare workers outside this week’s pay equity agreement with Te Whatu Ora haven’t been forgotten.
More than 30,000 Te Whatu Ora-employed nurses will receive a pay rise and a one-off lump sum payment to address historic pay gender-based pay discrimination.
John Whaanga, the Deputy Director of Health (Māori), says the lump sum payment of up to $15,000 and new pay rates will help retain health workers and make the profession more attractive.
“In terms of those who are outside the current arrangements, my understanding is there are still discussions in that space as well and there is a recognition for further work to be done but I think for now I think it’s important we acknowledge the parties. They’ve had some tough discussions and they’ve arrived at a place now where they’ve got something they want to take forward which is great,” he says.
