Iwi-Māori partnership boards hold national hui

Members of the 11 iwi partnership boards set up as part of the health reforms held their first national hui in Tamaki Makaurau over the weekend.
Health Ministry deputy director general John Whaanga says the boards will allow iwi and Māori communities to help balance national and regional planning with locally-led and locally-driven planning.
“On the other side too there is the opportunity for iwi-Māori partnership boards to bring along the planning they are undertaking themselves. We have a number of iwi that have quite significant plans underway in areas of social development including health, so there is the opportunity to line that up,” he says.
Mr Whaanga says as well as setting up the boards, in its first year the Māori health authority Te Aka Whai Ora has made considerable progress in building the capacity of Māori providers and establishing strong working relationships with the ministry, Te Whatu Ora and others in the health sector.
