$30m pūtea for whenua Māori cleanup

The Government has announced extra support to help remove sediment and debris from whenua Māori in Tairāwhiti and Te Matau-ā-Māui Hawke’s Bay.
Māori landowners who have completed their clean-up can apply restrospectively, as well as those who need support to start the mahi.
Maori Development Minister Willie Jackson says the $30 million is in addition to the $172 million announced last month to help local authorities and commercial property owners manage sediment and debris left by cyclone Cyclone Gabrielle.
“We’ve got multiple, multiple ownerships, there’s a lot of complications, so there has to be specific funds allocated for whenua Māori,” he says.
The Government has also announced a North Island Weather Events Loan Guarantee Scheme that will help firms by carrying up to 80 percent of the credit risk on eligible loans, allowing banks to reduce interest rates and offer more flexible terms.
