The Children’s Commissioner, Francis Eivers, says the revelation two staff have been stood down from Oranga Tamariki residences because of alleged inappropriate sexual behavior is further confirmation the residences should be closed down.
Former police commissioner Mike Bush will take on leadership of all youth justice and care and protection residences, as well as review all residences including Oranga Tamariki community-based homes.
Judge Eivers says one of the cases came to light through an unannounced monitoring visit by her staff.
She says coming on top of the stories revealed by the Royal Commission into historical abuse in care, New Zealanders cannot allow such things to keep happening.
