Te Ahiwaru seeks airport say
Auckland Airport mana whenua say they need to be considered in any sell off of Auckland Council’s airport shares.
Waikato Tainui negotiators have suggested the crown should buy the shares hand them over in part-settlement of their Tamaki Makaurau claims.
But Anya Tahere from Te Ahiwaru Trust says her Ihumatao-based hapu has also not settled – and it has maintained whenua tuku iho and whakapa immediately connected to the airport.
“Only 14 years ago we had 85 of our tupuna unearthed around the airport to make way for the second runway and we’e saying we’ve sacrificed a lot for the greater good of Auckland and so if there are shares to be sold by the Auckland Council it’s about time we reciprocate that goodness that unfortunately we’ve sacrificed,” Ms Tahere says.
