Kupe guides TOA to architectural acclaim
An education centre devoted to the explorer Kupe has won Māori-owned TOA Archtects the public architecture and Resene colour awards at this year’s New Zealand Institute of Architects-Te Kāhui Whaihanga Tāmaki Makaurau local awards.
Te Taumata o Kupe Nuku opened earlier this year at Te Māhurehure Marae in Point Chevalier.
TOA Architects founder, Nicholas Dalton says the practice was started to create projects which reflect the mana of the people and the land in Aotearoa.
He says it hasn’t finished at Te Mahurehure.
“Across the way from Kupe we’ve actually got 14 social homes right there designed with gardens, mara, we’re going to put up this big manu aute to reflect its Ngapuhi whakapapa,” Mr Dalton says.
