Marae mātauranga fuels research
The findings of an innovative marae-based research programme will be shared at a special symposium at Tāmaki Makaurau Marae next week.
Pūrangakura, an independent kaupapa Maori research centre, has been working with Makaurau Marae, Te Puea Memorial Marae, Papatuanuku Kokiri, Mataatua, Manurewa and Papakura Marae on issues such as their responses to homelessness and Covid-19.
Director Ngāhuia Eruera says the MOKO research project – standing for Marae Ora, Kāinga Ora – redefined what’s meant by the term researcher.
“These amazing wahine who were the nominated representatives, they were matauranga, they held the matauranga for their respective marae, They were already researchers in their own right and what they brought to the table and what they brought to this kaupapa was incredible knowledge of marae,” she says.
