Waiata anthems drop for NZ Music Month
Waiata Anthems is back with new waiata and video content in time for Te Marama Puoro O Aotearoa – NZ Music Month.
Throughout May, new waiata will be released from emerging and established artists, including MOHI, Chad Chambers, Nikau Grace, William Singe and Corrella.
Maori broadcast agency Te Māngai Pāho has also funded performance videos, five new short documentary stories, and lyric explainer clips to give audiences the meaning behind the songs.
Waiata Anthems coordinator Dame Hinewehi Mohi, says it’s inspiring to see the artists not only as champions of waiata but also sharing the stories of their reo Māori journeys, and the hopes and intentions at the heart of their music.
Since its inception in 2019, Waiata Anthems has supported more than 100 new waiata and creative lyric music videos, each sharing personal stories of disconnection, reclamation and courage through waiata reo Maori.
In 2023, it will release further music in July for Matariki and in Waiata Anthems Week in September.
