Petrol station stabbing blamed on soft crime policy
Whangarei-based National MP Shane Reti is using the death of a man in the city to attack what he calls the Government’s soft-on-crime approach.
The 25-year-old man died after being stabbed at a petrol station in Raumanga about 9.30 on Saturday night.
Witnesses said he had gone to the aid of a woman being attacked.
Dr Reti says he grew up in the suburb and his parents had a home overlooking the service station.
“We’re really working hard as a city and as a region to make sure we’ve got adequate policing resources but in a more general sense what the public is saying and this is sort of the tip of the iceberg if you like is that a general soft on crime approach is not and has not worked for Whangarei and for Northland,” he says.
Dr Reti says he is pushing to get more Police resources to Whangerei.
