Thousands drawn to secondary schools volleyball comp
Thousands of rangatahi are in Palmerston North this week for the national secondary schools volleyball tournament.
Māhina Melbourne, who’s there supporting the team from St Mary’s College in Wellington, says it’s a sport that draws in a large number of Maori and Pasifika rangatahi.
“Every school we come up against we find kids that we have connections to, whanau who culturally or in terms of religion resonate with the girls so it is an absolute honour to be here,” she says.
Māhina Melbourne says there have been non-stop games from 8am to after 10pm all week – and since Covid has upset the rankings, there could be some surprises among the overall winners.
