Young growers picked for Ahuwhenua final
Three wahine have made the final lineup for the Ahuwhenua Young Māori Grower Award.
Alix Te Kere from Ngāti Kuhungunu, Ngāti Tu, Ngāti Maru, and Ngāti Maniapoto. is a health and safety advisor for snack apple grower Rockit Management Services in Hastings.
Erica Henare from Ngāti Kahungunu and Ngāti Maniapoto is a pip fruit and kiwifruit manager for Wakatu Incorporation’s Kono business in Motueka.
Grace Rehu from Rangitane and Taranaki is a leading hand for Turners and Growers at Puketapu in Hawke’s Bay.
Judging panel member Aaron Hunt says despite a range of setbacks including a frost that hit the kiwifruit crop last October and Cyclone Gabrielle there is a strong spirit of hope and resilience in the sector.
He says horticulture is a great career option for Māori, offering an appealing outdoor lifestyle while also benefiting from technology and innovation.
This year’s finalists will attend the field days being held by the Ahuwhenua Trophy finalists, which will give them the opportunity to widen their networks, meet leaders in the horticultural industry and further develop their leadership opportunities.
