Shareholders want climate change action
Te Arawa Fisheries chief executive Chris Karamea Insley says people attending the weekend AGM wanted to know what the company was doing to protect the environment.
He says the damage done by Cyclone Gabrielle to Tairawhiti and Kahungunu has increased awareness of what is happening in the taiao.
“There are the normal things about what’s happening commercially but there’s a really strong drive I’m sensing now coming from our people – we had better be doing something practical as Maori organisations to respond to what we are seeing in climate change and sustainability,” Mr Insley says.
He says climate change is contributing to a decline in wild fisheries.
