Marae answers call after hostel fire
Hamilton police say a marae was the only place they could find willing to take in 47 tourists left on the street after a fire at their hostel late on Tuesday night.
Senior Sergeant Chris McRae says after several attempts at finding accommodation were unsuccessful, he called Kirikiriroa Māori Wardens head, Gloria Dornan, who contacted Hui Te Rangiora Marae.
Despite it being midnight, caretaker Dennis Rangi opened the meeting house to provide a safe, comfortable space for the tourists to sleep.
Senior Sergeant McRae says police staff stopped off at the marae in the morning to ensure all was well and deliver a koha.
Police and FENZ have determined the fire was not suspicious.
