Te Matatini ray of hope in Gabrielle gloom

Te Matatini life member Trevor Maxwell from Ngāti Rangiwewehi says he’s thankful the competition is going ahead despite cyclone Gabrielle.
Mr Maxwell was an organiser of what was then known as the Polynesian Festival in Rotorua in 1972.
Kaihaka from around the country will be welcomed tomorrow at Okahu for the festival, which starts on Wednesday at Eden Park.
Te Arawa has six teams, who are grateful last week’s storms did not create further delay.
“Our hearts go out to all our relatives along the Tai Rāwhiti and Kahungunu-Hawke’s Bay coasts. We hope things turn out well for them. We can help – when we need to be called up for help we will – but looking forward to coming to Tāmaki Makaurau,” Mr Maxwell says.
