Info gap as power, phone lines down

The Prime Minister says communications outages to parts of the Hawke’s Bay and Tairawhiti means it’s hard to estimate the number of people who may have been displaced by Cyclone Gabrielle.
Chris Hipkins says as at Tuesday afternoon the number of people displaced or evacuated included 1000 in Te Tai Tokerau, 1000 in Hawkes Bay, 400 in Tāmaki Makaurau and 75 in Waikato.
Power and phone outages means accurate figures aren’t known for Te Tairawhiti, Wairoa, the Coromandel and parts of Taitokerau.
:There are teams on the ground there and there is some contact with the teams on the ground but there is no quesiutoin that particulalry in areas like Wairoa, we are not at this moment clear how isolated those communities are but it would appear quite isolated so we are working very hard to get a fuller picture of what is happening in those communities,” Mr Hipkins says.
