Hauraki has been hammered by Cyclone Gabrielle, with the eye of the storm sitting overnight between the tip of the Cormandel Peninsula and Aotea- Great Barrier.
Ngati Whanaunga chair Mike Baker from Manaia says he’s been getting calls from communities right around Te Tara-O-Te-Ika.
“Coroglen, there’s major (slips) up there, we’ve got trees and big slips across the road, there’s more as we go over in Harataunga, Koputauaki and Matarangi’s cut off, so we’ve got all those sorts of things going,” he says.
Low lying areas on the peninsula’s eastern coast are being hit by the combination of high tides and heavy rain.
