Mangere waterways show impact of unchecked growth
A Mangere woman who has been working for years to clean up the area’s waterways says outdated infrastructure makes the task extremely difficult.
Julia Tu’ineau has been coordinating teams of volunteers from local colleges and helping with a Curious Minds programme for to show young people the science of the streams and harbour around them.
But regular pollution events and stormwater overflows stop any lasting progress.
“The whole system needs a reboot. The demand for human homes seems to have priority over the homes of everything else that calls Aotearoa home. Humans are diplacing and killing all our older brothers and sisters – the fish, the birds, the moths – all because we don’t understand,” she says.
Julia Tu’ineau says Auckland is trying to get by on 100 year old infrastructure.
