Funds to build Maori scientific research
The Government has created two new funds for Māori and Pacific scientific research.
Research, Science and Innovation Minister Dr Ayesha Verrall says He tipu ka hua and He aka ka toro will provide up to $10 million a year to Māori organisations to build Māori research capacity, capability and aspirations.
They’ll open in April and July respectively and will run for five years.
Dr Verrall says Māori and Pacific peoples are underrepresented in the research workforce, and diversity is vital for the science system to realise its full potential,.
Also being planned are a fellowship programme for early-to-mid-career Māori and Pacific researchers called Ngā Puanga Pūtaiao, and an internship programme for Young Māori innovators, Te Ara Pōtiki.
