Marae ready for storm battering

Marae around Tamaki Makaurau have opened their doors to people in need as heavy rainfall continues to wreak havoc throughout the region.
Papakura Marae chief executive Tony Kake says while his area got off relatively lightly, the marae is lending support to the hard hit areas like Mangere and west Auckland.
Existing networks with organisations like Manukau Urban Maori Authority and Waipareira have been fired up through regular zoom calls through the day.
“We’re coordinated and linking up with what’s happening with each other and helping each other where we can. so the trial run with the last two years of Covid has been useful, but those networks have already been established. MUMA, Nga Whare Waatea, they’re all part of the links in how we coordinate and respond,” Mr Kake says.
People can get assistance through MSD on 0800 400 100 or Auckland Emergency Management on 0800 22 22 00, who are coordinating with marae and services such as Turuki Health.
