South Auckland councillor Alf Filapaina want people to take care in and around the water this Auckland Anniversary weekend.

Drownings in Auckland waters reached a 14-year high last year, and this years is shaping up tobee worse.

The former police officer says drowning or near-drowning incidents are traumatic not just for whanau but for first responders.

“You’re not as strong as the water when you enter into it so if in doubt, get out,” he says.
