Te Pou opens new home for indigenous drama

Henderson’s Corban Estate Arts Centre resounded to ancient chants and haka early this morning aa a new home was opened for Maori performing arts and storytelling.
Te Pou Theatre includes a large auditorium, a studio, rehersal and community spaces and offices.
Theatre co-founder Amber Curreen says the venue can seat up to 500 people.
She says it came after years of discussion among Tamaki Makaurau’s Maori perfomers.
“Everyone thought we needed a home so we found a small home in 2015 in New Lynn in 2015, we got everyone together to put in ideas for a name and we came up with Te Pou, and since 2015 we have been building towards this whare we are now in,” Curreen says.
