The road closed in August after extreme weather brought down slips
The Land Transport Agency says detailed design work is still needed to understand exactly how much the slip repairs will cost, and a timeframe for reopening the road.
Northland Regional Council chair Tui Shortland says councils and northern MPs have been pushing Government to reinstate a vital economic and social lifeline.
Strong representations from the community and iwi leadership had also played a key role.
