ACC challenged to up Māori equity progress
Accident Compensation’s Māori and equity head says the organisation must up its game if it is to meet Māori needs.
Michelle Murray says Māori are more than twice as likely to experience a serious injury, but much less likely to make an ACC claim.
“What we’ve seen is there is lower levels of understanding of the types of support ACC can provide and some people don’t believe their injury is serious enough, some don’t want to take time off work because they may be the sole breadwinner, some have had poor experiences with healthcare, so we need to overcome these barriers for Maori in terms of access to ACC,” she says,
Ms Murray says what works is getting Maori to design services for Maori..
