Public hangi pits for Mangere
Hangi master Rewi Spraggon expects a wide range of communities could come to appreciate the hangi pits he’s building on Mangere mountain.
The two pits should be ready to start steaming out feasts by Autumn.
Up to 400 will be able to be fed at any one time using the traditional Māori cooking method – which he says can be adapted to a wide range of kai.
“If the Indian community of Chinese or any ethnicity, Māori whatever, want to come up and use the pits, one of my staff will be there to support them and awhi them guide them, teach them how to do hangi. My thing about this is getting more people into traditional hangi cooking,” Mr Spraggon says.
A shed has been built beside the pits to house all the rocks and other equipment needed for the hangi.
