Ngatiwai to get numbers up for Census
Ngatiwai Trust Board has signed an agreement to work closely with Statistics New Zealand on collecting and interpreting data.
Chief executive Huhana Lyndon says the Northland iwi is keen to develop relationships with government agencies
She says the agreement includes working on next year’s census to ensure it doesn’t again fail Maori.
The agency has improved on what occurred last time so it’s over the last 12 months that we’ve been understanding the changes made but certainly we affirm our rangatiratanga and in that space we want to know the data is credible so we can interrogate it and then tell our story as te iwi o Ngatiwai,” Ms Lyndon says.
Stats NZ is also working closely with iwi and hapu in Tairawhiti, Bay of Plenty and Muriwhenua to develop a localised approach.
