Council two faced on three waters says Davis
Te Taitokerau MP Kelvin Davis says he can see multiple examples around his electorate why reform of water infrastructure is desperately needed.
The Water Services Bill implementing the reform is back before parliament today so an entrenchment clause can be removed, and it’s likely to pass before the end of the session.
Mr Davis says people say they oppose three waters and in the next breath complain about broken pipes leaking sewage into waterways.
In Dargaville, where the new mayor stood on an anti-three waters platform, development of more than 300 homes on a former racecourse is on hold because the town’s sewage ponds don’t can’t deal with the waste.
“The Kaipara District Council’s got a very small rating base. They’re going to come to the government and tell the government to solve their three waters problem because they can’t do it themselves – they can’t afford to. They’ll say no to three waters but they will still expect the government to fix the problem for them,” Mr Davis says.
He says opposition to three Waters is just a way to attack the government rather than find solutions.
