Von Tempsky history, Bryce in Grey zone
Waikato kaumatua Timi Maipi wants to see more colonial names struck from Kirikiriroa streets.
A street named after New Zealand Wars militia leader Gustavus Ferdinand Von Tempsky St, was this week renamed Puutikitiki Street.
The Nga Tamatoa founding member says he’s sick of being reminded of Aotearoa’s colonial past through names like Hamilton, Bryce and Grey on his home patch.
“That name John Bryce was the beginning of the war in Waikato, where he went to the Bank of New Zealand – which is another issue – to borrow money so he could start the wars against our people here in Waikato. aad that’s where our (tribal headquarters) is, in Bryce St. It makes a mockery, eh,” Mr Maipi says.
