Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira has secured the Education Ministry tick to establish a kura ā iwi.
Education and employment manager Bianca Elkington said the Porirua-based iwi is keen to establish a kura taiao that not only teaches Ngāti Toa reo, whakapapa, tikanga and kawa, but also takes ākonga with out of traditional classrooms into the environment.
She says for many students, classroom learning does not give the practical learning and experiences that they need to keep them engaged.
The kura is likely to be based at Whitireia in Titahi Bay or at another site of historical significance to Ngāti Toa.
