Education Ministry demands Te Kāpehu Whetū merger

The head of a former Whangarei charter school says it feels like the Education Ministry is deliberately trying to destroy it.
Te Kāpehu Whetū has been given just five weeks to complete a merger of its primary and secondary schools.
Raewyn Tipene says other former kura hourua were given up to two years to make the change.
She says the switch from the charter school model to the special character designation in the Education Act hasn’t suited Te Kāpehu Whetū, and it’s been one frustration after another.
“Is it incompetence, or is it deliberate destabilisation so that we can fail and fall over and disappear? Probably both,” Ms Tipene says.
She expects her outspokeness will make things more difficult for her two kura – but she’s tired of the Education Ministry’s colonisation attitude.
