IronMāori director Heather Te Au-Skipworth says the first IronMāori Toa full triathlon next month is a chance to reintroduce people to the ancient names for the landscape.
She says IronMaori has always been about helping whanau set goals which they can then apply to the rest of their life.
The December 3 event will start on the Napier shoreline.
“Along the shoreline Te Karaka which has been named by the mana whenua, Mana Ahuriri. (Competitors) will be swimming in the sea, 3.8km, it’s a three lap course so just over a km each time and then they jump on their bikes and head out to Te Kauwae-a-Māui which was also named Cape Kidnappers so I think it’s more palatable to start reintroducing and using a lot of our older names,” Ms Te Au Skipworth says.
After the 180 km cycling leg the 350 competitors will complete a 42.2 km run ending at the Napier soundshell.
