No shortcut to reopen Maungapōhatu marae
An historic marae deep in Te Urewera will be rededicated tomorrow.
Tanenuiārangi Marae in Maungapōhatu has been refurbished with funding from the Provincial Growth Fund’s Covid recovery package.
Tūhoe scholar Professor Taiarahia Black says it will be a chance to remember the prophet Rua Kenana and celebrate his enduring legacy.
Taonga and belongings stolen from the area during the police raids a century ago will be returned to their rightful home.
“What we are concentrating here is the act of historical reconstruction which allows all these voices to speak and reveal themselves to the people, including the taonga,” Professor Black says.
