Young Māori farmers show their mettle

A Hawke’s Bay assistant farm manager has won this year’s Ahuwhenua Young Māori Farmer Award for sheep and beef.
Chloe Butcher-Herries from Ngāti Mahanga works at Newstead Farms in Puketapu near Napier.
Māori Trustee Charlotte Severne says because oif the high calibre of this year’s finalists, all three will be inducted as alumni to the award.
The other finalists are Puhirere Te-Akainga Tamanui Tau, who works as a shepherd for Whangara Farms on its Rototahi and Puatai stations near Tolaga Bay, and Rameka Eli Edwards, who manages Reon and Wendy Verry’s Puketitiri and Waitete farms near Te Kuiti.
As part of the judging process the finalists attended an intensive three-day study tour designed to provide a range of insights, inspiration and experiences across the sheep and beef sector.
