Wi Pere Trust Ahuwhenua winner
Gisborne’s Wi Pere Trust has won the 2022 Ahuwhenua Trophy for the top Māori sheep and beef farm for its operation at Te Karaka.
Trustee Trudy Meredith says it was the first time the trust has entered the prestigious competition.
She hopes it will help people realise the high standard of its operations and the way it looks after people.
The award was presented by Agriculture Minsiter Damien O’Connor at the trophy awards dinner in Taradale on Friday.
He says Māori account for 25 percent of the production of sheep, beef and wool and have brought a highly professional approach to their farming operations.
As they develop their land further it will lead to the creation of even bigger enterprises.
The other finalists were Onuku Māori Lands Trust near Rotorua and Hereheretau Station near Wairoa.
