Ngāti Hāua $19m settlement on the way
Upper Whanganui iwi Ngāti Hāua has signed an Agreement in Principle to settle its historic claims.
Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Minister Andrew Little says the crown acknowledges treaty breaches including its use of military force against Ngāti Hāua, bringing war to the Ngāti Hāua rohe in the 1860s, and the unjust trial of the tūpuna Te Rangiatea and Matene Ruta Te Whareaitu, leading to the execution of Te Whareaitu.
The iwi’s area of interest is based around the northern reaches of the Whanganui River extending to Mount Ruapehu, including the township of Taumarunui.
The settlement will include commercial and financial redress of $19 million, the return of a number of sites of cultural significance, a cultural fund of $1.4 million, and relationship agreements with of Crown agencies aimed at supporting Ngāti Hāua’s social transformation aspirations of Ngāti Hāua.
It will also recognise Te Pou Tikanga, the values of Ngāti Hāua, that affirm and align with the pou that traditionally have marked the Ngāti Hāua rohe.
