Review probes bias in accident help

Accident compensation is getting a revamp to ensure the scheme is treating all people fairly.
ACC legislation was passed by Parliament fifty years ago this week, and current minister Carmel Sepuloni says society has changed since then and parts of the scheme need modernising.
She says for various reasons women, Māori, Pacific and disabled people don’t receive the same support, despite paying the same percentage of their wages and salary in levies as everyone else.
She announced a review of schedule two of the act, which looks at what occupational diseases should be covered and how they may impact different population groups.
“Also looking to put a gender lens over it so we can actually look to see if there are more occupational injuries that impact on women that are not covered.
“The framework will take a little bit longer with regards to legislation but the schedule 2 review is already under way,” Ms Sepuloni says.
Last month the act was chance to allow compensation for birth-related injuries.
