Māori focus needed for alcohol harm reduction

Alcohol Action NZ wants a radical shift in thinking on alcohol, especially in light of its increased harm for Māori and Pacifica .
Spokesperson Dr Tony Farrell says Green MP Chloe Swarbrick’s alcohol harm reduction bill, which would end appeals on local alcohol policies and cut alcohol-related sports sponsorship, is a step in the right direction.
But he says even more is needed to help Maori and Pacifica communities take part in the process.
“I think we need to enshrine Te Tiriti in law so that Maori have access. We all need to take responsibility as a community but we also have to have the availability of a seat at the table,” Dr Farrell says.
This week’s Alcohol Action conference in Wellington this week heard how Maori and Pacifica communities are suffering the most harm from a lack of effective regulation of alcohol sales.
