Whakatohea settlement vote starts

Voting has opened on a proposed settlement for Whakatōhea, 30 years after the Eastern Bay of Plenty iwi rejected an earlier settlement offer.
Whakatōhea Pre-Settlement Claims Trust negotiator Maui Hudson says the crown has agreed Whakatohea can proceed to settlement while continuing with the Waitangi Tribunal process, so whanau can still be heard and put their experiences on record.
The settlement will provide financial and commercial redress worth over $100 million, as well as the potential return of 5,000 hectares of marine space.
Mr Hudson says the components of the settlement focused on mana moana will give Whakatōhea resources to enhance their vision to be a global leader in aquaculture innovation.
Voting closes on November 18.
