Hapu keen to help with port move

Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei is welcoming new Auckland mayor Wayne Brown’s call for Ports of Auckland to work towards stopping car importation and container services on the current site.
Mayor Brown has told port company chair Jan Dawson he wants the company to work with mana whenua and other stakeholders on a plan to develop the area from the Ferry Building to Bledisloe Wharf into an area that can be enjoyed by all Aucklanders.
He also wants it to to shift port freight from road to rail.
Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Trust deputy chair Ngarimu Blair says as the traditional guardian of the Waitematā and central Auckland the hapu supports the plan.
He says from its marae and village on Bastion Point it has seen the encroachment of the port on the harbour, which is no longer appropriate for a world-class city.
