Treaty referendum election bargaining chip

National Party leader Chris Luxon isn’t committing to likely coalition partner ACT’s call for a referendum on the Treaty of Waitangi.
ACT wants to pass a law on how the treaty should be interpreted, and then put it to a referendum in a similar way to show the assisted dying law was managed.
It also wants to reverse three waters legislation, the Māori Health authority, and resource management law that requires consultation based on race.
Mr Luxon says National will follow its own course.
Mr Luxon says National believes in one country and a single system based on need, and equality under the law.
