Tight fight keeps Croon in charge

Rēkohu- Wharekauri – the Chatham Islands – has returned Monique Croon, of Ngati Mutunga, for a second term as mayor.
With a turnout of over 60 percent, her 124 votes put her eight ahead of councillor Greg Horler.
The islands have a population of about 600.
She says Rēkohu-Wharekauri has no Maori Wards, because 70 percent of the population is either Ngati Mutunga or Moriori – or both.
“And then also in my role as mayor we treat both Ngati Mutunga and Moriori as equal treaty partners and we a working together towards more a co-governance but but having more representative voice around our island leadership,” Ms Croon says.
She says all residents are keen to see the island prosper – and treaty settlements will be a major part of that.
