Temple closed as restorers struggle for cash

Raetihi’s Whare Whakamoemiti has been closed to visitors because of the shaky state of its iconic bell tower.
Apotoro Rehita Robbie Williams says the pressure is now on to raise the funds necessary to restore the 100-year-old Ratana temple.
Since the restoration project started in 2018 the community has raised $63,000, but it needs to get over $200,000 to release the necessary crown funding.
He says it’s a taonga that needs to be there for future generations.
“So that they will never have the problem of having to seek resource consents, putea, all that. there’s a lot of wortk in it do we are doing it for our rangatahi mo apopo,” Mr Williams says.
