Turnout disappoints in low spark election

The Minister for Pacific Peoples says something is needed to spark people’s interest in local body elections.
Aupito William Sio says the addition of Māori wards has created a new landscape for local government, but the overall turnout was lower than in previous elections.
“My sense is that people are busy with work, with children, with sports, with the church, other activities, and they sort of trust that whoever is on there will do the right thing,” he says.
Mr Sio says a large number of Maori and Pacifica mayors, councillors and local board members taking their seats shows Aotearoa is moving towards increasingly multi-cultural representation.
