Tepania in nail-biting finish to Far North mayoral race


The winner of the Far North mayoralty may not be known until the end of the week, with the lead switching yesterday from Ann Court to fellow councillor and Kaikohe kura kaupapa teacher Moko Tepania.
Special votes will be counted today.
Tepania won reelection to council in the new Māori ward, along with Hilda Halkyard-Harawira, Tamati Rakena and Penetaui Klescovic.
In Northland Regional Council, the Maori ward seats went to Peter Lucas Jones and Tui Shortland.
In New Plymouth District, Neil Holdom was returned for his third term as mayor with 9880 votes on the night followed by Dinnie Moeahu on 3743 and Murray Chong 10 votes further back.
Mr Moeahu was reelected as a councillor at large.
Te Waka McLeod became the first councillor in the Te Purutanga Mauri Pūmanawa Māori ward.
