Henare backs Collins for Auckland top spot

Tamaki Makaurau MP Peeni Henare says one of the leading candidates for the Auckland mayoralty seems to be running a stealth campaign.
He still hasn’t heard from Wayne Brown, despite his electorate covering a large part of the super city.
That’s in contrast to his main rival, Manukau councilor Efeso Collins.
“I’m supporting Efeso because he is that person I see all the time. He reaches our during challenging times – with this stuff around the ram raids we are seeing and the types of crimes we are seeing in the community, I heard from Efeso really quickly and that is even before these elections even started,” Mr Henare says.
Voting closes on Saturday, and people will need to either post their ballot papers early in the week or get them in to a library, council service centre or Countdown supermarket.
Peeni Henare won’t be round to see if his vote counted – as Minister of Defence he jetted off today Defence for the Middle East where he will visit New Zealand Defence Force personnel deployed within the region, including in Operation Gallant Phoenix in Jordan and the Multinational Force and Observers mission on the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt.
He’ll also meet with his counterparts in Egypt, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.
The Government recently extended the mandates for New Zealand’s peace support operations in the Middle East.
