EIT opens centre to spark Māori community research


Eastern Insitute of Technology has opened a new centre for Māori research on its Taradale campus.
EIT Māori and Indigenous Research Professor David Tipene-Leach says Te Kura i Awarua was a significant step forward for community research.
He says the polytechnic needs to know what research communities want done develop more Māori capacity to do it.
Professor Tipene-Leach will be a co-director of the centre along with Dr Annemarie Gillies, EIT’s professor rangahau Māori, and its advisory board includes representtives from Ngati Kahungunu and mana whenua hapu Ngāti Pārau.
Initial research projects include work on health, food security, environmental challenges, as well as recording and archiving the history of hapū and iwi in the region.
