Name switch for Te Araroa barge facility

Promoters of a barge facility at Te Araroa say it will open up a wide range of marine activities.
Working group secretary, Tiwana Tibble, says in response to community feedback the proposed facility has been renamed Te Araroa Kāhui Kupenga Marine Access Facility.
This recognises that many nets will be cast out to sea for multiple recreational and commercial uses including aquaculture, log and produce shipments.
The facility can be used to launch not only barges but other shallow-hull vessels such as those which will service Whakatōhea’s mussel farm once a similar dual rock groyne passageway is built at Ōpōtiki.
Mr Tibble says the purpose of the project has been expanded to recognise greater opportunities such as aquaculture.
Log cartage may be the bitter that goes with the sweet.
The working group is preparing cultural, environmental, and engineering design reports with the aim of applying for a resource consent before 30 June 2023.
