Moana voice grows up

It’s five years since Jaedyn Randell took on the voice of Moana in the first te reo Māori adaptation of a Disney animation, and now she’s landed the gig as the voice of Princess Anna in Frozen Reo Māori.
Others joining the cast include Ahikāroa and Shortland Street actress Awhimai Fraser, opera singer Kawiti Waetford, James Tito, Pere Wihongi, Rutene Spooner, Wairangi Koopu and Bella Kalolo-Suraj.
21-year-old Randell, who has been studying for a degree in music technology and trying to carve out a career as a singer songwriter, says she tried to stick to the original sound as much as possible but added her own mana wahine.
“In comparison to Moana, she is a little bit more grown up so I feel like it has been a nice, natural kind of growth,” she says.
Frozen Reo Māori is produced and directed by Tweedie Waititi and Chelsea Winstanley, with Pānia Papa overseeing te reo Maori, Rachel House advising on performance and Rob Ruha directing the music, with help from Pere Wihongi and Hana Mereraiha.
It will be on screens on October 27.
