Kids kapa haka takes small screen view
There could be big changes a foot for the national secondary schools’ kapa haka competition.
Because of concerns about Covid, the competition was broken into five regional events held last week.
The performances will be shown on Whakaata Maori starting tomorrow, and the winners will be announced on Friday.
Organising committee deputy chair Kimiora Webster says it raises the question of whether they should embrace other multi-media options to keep rangatahi engaged.
“Our kids will actually engage more with watching things on TikTok and Facebook instead of watching things broadcast on TV, so that’s what we have tried to do. From this point we will have to sit down as a national committee to see what the pros and cons are of running a competition in this fashion,” he says.
Mr Webster says the committee is keen to maintain traditional kanohi-ki-te-kanohi competitions.
