University backing Te Matatini

A Māori education leader at Auckland University believes a new partnership with Te Matatini will be a sea-change for the organisation.
Michael Steedman, of Ngāti Whātua and Te Uri O Hau, is deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Maori – and a member of Te Matatini finalist Hātea from Whangārei.
He says the university has contributed to Matatini in the past – but nothing as high-profile as what it is planning for 2023.
“For me it’s really about contribution and service, given that we haven’t been involved, At the very lease we can start building these relationships as an organisation that’s prominent within Tamaki,” Mr Steedman says.
The biennial Te Matatini national kapa haka festival will be held in February next year at Ngā Ana Wai, Eden Park – and Steedman says the university is planning to throw significant funding and resources into the event.
