A candidate for Porirua’s Māori ward says he wants to get more rangatahi involved in the council.

Caleb Ware says the city is undergoing massive growth, and he’s concerned about the effect of that on the taiao.

He says young people want to have a stake in the future of their city.

“Council’s always been seen as this council in the sky that doesn’t really mingle with its people, especially Maori, so my plan is to be the conduit between Maori and council to make sure their voices are heard in some of the matters that affects them the most but they seem to be innocent,” Mr Ware says.

He’s proud to have the support of his iwi Ngati Toa Rangatira, but he won’t be the iwi’s representative, as it has its own structural relationship with the council.
